Besides the obvious ways to save energy and help the environment, such as keeping your thermostat set at 68 degrees and insulating all accessible hot water pipes, here are 3 more tips most people don't think of that can help you have a "greener" winter.
1. Use biodegradable antifreeze. One choice is the newly formulated AMSOIL Biodegradable Antifreeze Coolant. It now contains a proprietary poly organic acid technology. According to AMSOIL, this new formula provides maximum biodegradable antifreeze and cooling protection in the most extreme temperatures and operating conditions. Unlike conventional ethylene glycol based products, which are highly toxic and can be fatal, it's much less toxic and presents no threat to children, pets, or wildlife. AMSOIL also claims it requires no special disposal costs or procedures in most areas. Be sure and check your local collection facility for requirements. To find yours go to www.earth911.org.
2. Take care of frosty windshields naturally. To prevent ice from covering your car windows, and causing long warm-ups and wasted gas, try rubbing the inside glass with a salt-water-soaked sponge, then dry with a clean cloth. The salt residue will keep the ice away. Other options to try are putting a layer of bubble wrap over your car's windshield in the evening, using frost-proof PE film for car windshields, or spraying 3 parts vinegar to 1 part water on your windshield.
3. Plug up air leaks - from your attic, front door, and the door between the garage and your home. Look for light coming in around the door, indicating weather stripping needs to be replaced and beefed up in those spots.
