The picture below is what you don’t want to see when you’re a homeowner. It tells the story of what can happen when windows are improperly installed…
You might think this looks like a typical DIY job. In reality, even contractors that you might think know what they’re doing can cause rot in your home from poorly executed installations. All contractors are NOT created equal and low bid is NOT the best way to decide on who will do the work on your home.
This picture is of a project we recently completed in Murphys, Ca. As we progressed through the work, we kept finding more and more and more rot like this.
With all the rain we've had lately, and more on the way, it's a good idea to be sure and check out your windows and doors for leakage. It’s far better to have repairs done before it gets to the point of rot in the siding of your home.
While you’re checking for those water leaks, make sure you have plenty of caulking around those windows too. Caulking can help prevent water damage inside and outside your home. It forms a flexible seal for cracks, gaps, or joints less than 1/4 inch wide.
If you’re touching up the caulking yourself, be sure and clean all areas to be caulked first. Remove any old caulk and paint using a putty knife or screwdriver. Make sure the area is good and dry, so you don’t seal in moisture.
