If you're looking for a creative way to improve the appearance of your kitchen, without the high price of a kitchen remodel, updating your kitchen soffits is a good starting point. In case you don't know what a soffit is, kitchen soffits are typically drywall "extensions" of your ceiling that create a box above your cabinets. This "box" hides electrical wiring, ducts, etc. and prevents the tops of your cabinets from becoming "dust collectors".
Kitchen soffits can also be extensions of your cabinets, they are disguised to look just like your cabinets (like the picture on the left) although they are just for decoration and can't be accessed like a regular cabinet. Many people find kitchen soffits to be an eyesore but it all depends on how well you disguise it. If you're having trouble finding inspiration, here's some ways you can disguise your kitchen soffit.
1. Add crown moulding. Crown moulding is a timeless and elegant way to blend your kitchen soffit with your cabinets. Crown moulding can effortlessly elevate the look of your kitchen.
Crown moulding is designed to go at the top of the cabinets themselves, like the picture shown on the right from Mid Continent Cabinetry, or as an accent at the top of the soffit.
2. Paint the soffit same color as your walls. Kitchen soffits are often painted the same color as the walls, making the room feel taller rather than small and crowded.
3. Have your backsplash go all the way up to the ceiling (shown on the left). This is a modern look that you won't see in many kitchens. Backsplash is a unique and stunning way to tie in the soffit with the rest of your kitchen.
4. Cover the kitchen soffit with art (shown on the right). Whether it's your own art or somebody else's, art is a good way to bring creativity into your kitchen. If you're thinking of being really creative, you could directly paint art on the soffit or use stencils instead of using framed art.
5. Add wallpaper. Most people see wallpaper as outdated (like the picture shown on the right) but, as with everything else, wallpaper has changed with the times and is a matter of personal preference.
Your kitchen soffit isn't limited to these examples. There are many options to dress it up, the only limit is your imagination.
